Let’s do this long order style. Let’s spend the day building and making.

We’ll start with an ordinary, plain box and paint, sand, wax, collage, groove and learn aging techniques to make it a box that looks like it was found in your grandfather’s barn or your great Aunt’s closet. That kind of box deserves to be used. It will become the very holder of our centerpiece: The Altered Book. Using layering techniques, with vintage books and juicy old paper, you will create the images you wish to highlight and they will act as the center piece of your book. We’ll learn how to build a banner that holds your sentiment high and frames out your shadowbox. And then we’ll add our pop-up characters. Sourced from vintage books, some from the early 1900’s, we’ll cut and score and rise these images from their previous pages and learn how to make them come to life in our shadowbox altered book. This isn’t the kind of workshop that can be done in a couple hours; we’re going to need a bit of time to really give it our all. Let’s pull out all the materials, let’s sort through our brains for messages to behold, let’s create to our hearts content.

Come enjoy a day of creating, making and storytelling. We’ll begin our inspirational day in the Last Bookstore’s Labyrinth where we’ll choose our books and find even more characters amongst the pages that we can use. We’ll take a break for lunch at the historic Grand Central Market, exposing ourselves to the sights and sounds of old and new Los Angeles, and then come back for the afternoon, inspired and learned, to continue our creations. I can’t wait to see what we come up with!
